Links
- Software -

Links to software sites, shareware, freeware and programs which I use regularly.
This might be considered as a sort of advertisement, but I only list software that I can truely recommend and all that without any financial profit for myself.
Most of the software is for Win32 platforms.

It is a sad fact that links especially to smaller software companies or private authors often change. If one of the links below should not work for you, please drop me a note and I'll try to locate the new address. Or perhaps you already found the new place on the web - please let me know as well!

back to top    Internet and Web Editing MS-DosWin-32LinuxMACOS/2SunOS
Copernic
With more and more information and an increasing number of sites, the internet gets bigger and bigger.
Which search engine is best?
Where do I look for "xyz"?
This program simultaneously queries the major search engines and presents the results in a clear list.
HomeSite
THE web editor
FirstPage
a nice freeware HTML editor, almost as good as HomeSite at no cost
The Proxomitron
Pop-up windows and banners are annoying. This little program runs in the background on your computer and cleans up the incoming data...
It also guards against certain hacker attacks and best of all it is fully configurable.
ZoneAlarm
Why would you need a firewall?
Well if you are using a dial-up connection to the internet you probaly don't. However in times when cable modems, DSL and other broadband services spread increasingly with more and more computers running 24 hours a day like mine it is good to protect yourself, your system and your data from outside attacs.
Until I installed ZoneAlarm myself I had no idea how many pathetic hackers actually were running port scans and trying to get inforamtion out of my computer!
Opera
the third modern web browser - and the one closest to the standards
Netscape not only a web browser, but also a mail and news program, HTML editor....
You can choose between the version 4.7x which is not complying to all standards or the version 6 which is somewhat slow...
IExplorer too many badly designed web sites force you to use the Internet Explorer...
WS-FTP
a nice FTP client
XThinPro
An XWindows server to be run under Win32.

Thumbs Plus
Originally an image database with an increasing range of image processing possibilities.
With the current version 4.50 and the next version 5.0 under beta-testing it offers even more features.
Among others you can create thumbnailed web pages, convert and resize a batch of images, stamp copyright marks and you have a large number of database tools for assigning keywords and user defined fields to images, import digital camera EXIF information into the database, search for database contents and image similarity...
ULead SmartSaver
As a freestanding Windows application and PhotoShop-compatible plugin, this utility lets you interactively control the settings for JPEG and GIF file saves. This way you can choose between size and quality as you like...
Version 2 which I'm using often comes on third-party CDs.
The Panorama Factory
A nice tool to stitch panoram images together!
The older version 1.6 is freeware.
Paintshop Pro
This powerful image processing software really is a great tool. Some older versions are available as shareware.
Photoimpact
Another great piece of image processing software. The functionality of the ULead SmartSavers is already built-in into the save dialogs.
POV-Ray
The Persistence of Vision raytracer lets you program any scene in a C-like language and then translates your code to impressive 3D images and/or animations. It is used for artistic as well as scientific applications.
ACDSee
Once I thought it to be the best image browser but that was before I got to know ThumbsPlus!

back to top    Textprocessing MS-DosWin-32LinuxMACOS/2SunOS
WinEdt
a versatile Windows text editor, especially suited for LaTeX documents. I personally use it for all kinds of ASCII files like program source code, batch files, scripts - and of course for TeX documents.
MikTeX yet another LaTeX distribution
LaTeX Still the best text processing and layout system available when it comes to scientific typesetting
